The Cabin at Buckwheat Lake

Recreation

The Cabin at Buckwheat Lake is privacy that's difficult to find in this hectic day and age.  After a day spent fishing Buckwheat, or hiking the miles of trails on the Cabin's private 60 wooded acres, what better way to relax than in the hammock that is strung between two of the lake's fine pine trees.  You'll want to get a nice campfire started for the evening marshmallow roast!

Buckwheat's private land includes miles of walking paths to spend countless hours exploring the beauty of the Northern Michigan's Manistee-Huron National Forest.  Other activities on the property include a paddle boat, canoe and, of course, a rowboat for fishing.

There is also a 100 yard target range for shooting aficionados, as well as a pistol/revolver range.

Activities

SWIMMING

After a refreshing dip in Buckwheat Lake, climb upon our floating dock, relax in the sun and feel your tensions ease.

FISHING

Fishing at Buckwheat Lake is a treat!  Its the type of lake where the fish are challenging enough to hook, but most days you can count on reeling in a nice catch.  That's why Buckwheat Lake is  a youngster's delight!

But for the seasoned angler, the 20 to 24 inch Largemouth Bass are indeed  a trophy to land, photograph and then release back into the spring fed waters of Buckwheat.

Pan fish and bluegills are numerous, with many pan fish exceeding the size of the outstretched hand.  Buckwheat Lake was stocked in the fall of 2008 with perch and walleye, which are still in the process of growing to a respectable size.

A rowboat with oars is provided with The Cabin and if you have an electric trolling motor by all means bring it.  Gasoline motors are not allowed on Buckwheat Lake.

Buckwheat Lake is a catch and release lake, although we are not oppossed to an occasional Bluegill dinner. Additionally, since it is a private lake no fishing license is required.

Less than a mile away from Buckwheat you'll find the Little Manistee River, well known as one of Michigan's blue ribbon trout streams.  You'll need a fishing license and trout stamp for the Little Manistee.

For world class salmon fishing, the ports of Ludington,  Manistee and Frankfort offer trophy catches from the clean waters of Lake Michigan.

NATURE WALKS

Get your blood pumping and your energy level up. Walk or hike the marked trails around the lake and property. Pristine forests, fields, bogs, swamps and a trout stream nearby.

BIRD WATCHING

Remember to bring your binoculars to find our resident pair of American Bald Eagles. Find the nest where the Common Loons reside or look for the Great Blue Heron. Depending on the season, you may find Ruffled Grouse, Baltimore Orioles, Cardinals, Wild Turkeys and Sandhill Cranes or Northern White-Throated Sparrows.

PICNIC

How about a priceless view while picnicking with that special someone? Families enjoy picnics, especially with favorite summer foods and drinks at hand.

FIRE PITS AND S’MORES

It’s time for stories and tall tales with your friends around the Fire pit. Time to roast marshmallows, eat cookies and chocolate, get cozy by the fire; watch the stars come out. So grab your chair and kick back for a good time.

CAMPFIRES

Remember sitting around a crackling fire in the cool evenings, eating hot dogs, reminiscing about good times, or even singing favorite songs with family and friends? You can do it again when you stay at The Cabin. We provide the location and the rest is up to you. If you sing off key, no one will notice.

BIKING

If you wish to bring your own bike, we recommend mountain-type bikes due to the terrain.

PAINTING

Winston Churchill had the right idea taking his paints and easel wherever he traveled. Bring your own easel to capture some of the best scenic views Michigan has to offer year ‘round.

STARGAZING

It’s not just for lovers! Check out a pair of binoculars and test your knowledge of the night sky. Practice your navigational skills by adding a compass. Or, just sit back, relax, and “dream a little dream of thee…”

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

When the deep, white powder arrives at our door, bring your cross-country skis to sail over our groomed trails. (Bring your own equipment.)

SNOW-SHOEING

Like Hansel and Gretel, let your snowshoe tracks be your path back to the warmth of the Cabin fire after an invigorating trek through the snow-covered woods. (Bring your own equipment.)

SNOW-MOBILING

Local trails are available in the great up-north. (Bring your own equipment.)
